Summary

A Vacancy at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The post will be based at Broadgreen and Aintree Hospitals. Day to day duties will be varied including outpatient clinics and theatre sessions. The emphasis will be to provide an overview of management of metastatic patients in an experienced regional metastatic unit. The trainee will operate under supportive supervision to develop their surgical skills. A number of the consultants are deeply involved in educational roles all the way from undergraduate level to registrar level and pride themselves on training the next generation of surgeons.

This is a 6 month post starting August 2026. The fellowship is aimed at a peri-CCT, or equivalent trainee with a specific interest in metastatic bone disease. We hope to train them to a level at which they are capable of setting up and managing a metastatic service as well as specialising in lower limb arthroplasty surgery.

The successful candidate will also gain experience in revision hip and knee arthroplasty. The Fellow will be accountable to Mr Birender Kapoor as the chief trainer. There will be opportunity to work with other consultants in the unit. This enables the successful candidate to experience the whole range of experience offered by the unit consisting of keen and experienced trainers.

The post supports the clinical activity of the Liverpool Metastatic Bone Service (LiMBS) and arthroplasty team. There is on-call commitment including weekend operating. The candidate will have formal time allocation for research. There are weekly regional arthroplasty and metastatic MDT meetings to learn management of complex patients. The post offers directly supervised operating with consultant support to practice acquired surgical skills.

Once competencies have been assessed the fellow takes part in a 1 in 8 weekend day trauma list, with onsite supervision and this is remunerated. This affords the successful candidate to hone their trauma and training skills in preparation for their consultant career.

Teaching sessions will involve case conference and teaching sessions. The fellow will be expected to attend conferences and present research work at national and/ or international meetings. There is a huge opportunity to study a prospective database of metastatic patients to perform.
