    As a Band 3 Technical Instructor, you will be required to support the Registered Nurse/Physiotherapist Specialists and Senior Technical Instructors in the overall delivery of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation programme. Under the delegated supervision of the Registered Nurse/Physiotherapist Specialists and Senior Technical Instructors, you will assist in the assessment processes, delivery of exercise classes, deliver education sessions, and undertake reassessment/evaluation activities, providing explanation, support and advice to patients, relatives and carers, as appropriate within your competency. You will be expected prioritise and organise yourself in order to complete delegated activities, meeting the needs of the patients and the service. You will be responsible for reporting clinical observations, escalating any concerns and documenting clinical activity that you undertake. Clinical 1. To assist with supervision and support of Service Users at Pulmonary Rehabilitation Classes and give accurate feedback on observations. Support and supervise patients during exercise classes, providing accurate feedback on observations made to the most appropriate colleague. 2. To provide support and encouragement to patients throughout the Pulmonary Rehabilitation process. 3. Under direction of the Senior Technical Instructor, you will be expected to administer the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Service. 4. Support delivery of exercise programmes with individuals or groups as directed by the Registered Nurse / Physiotherapist or Senior Technical Instructor. 5. To set up and take down all the activity equipment at class locations, check and clean equipment following Trust Policy and Procedures. When class has finished, ensure all equipment is cleaned and stored appropriately. 6. To assist a Service User in practical problem solving by obtaining information on services which may enhance independence. 7.     An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated Genetic Technologist to join Oxford Genetics Laboratories (OGL) at the Churchill Hospital, part of the Central and South Genomic Laboratory Hub (GLH) on a fixed-term contract, ending 31/03/2028. The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of a high-quality genomic diagnostic service, performing a range of genetic tests in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures. Working under the supervision of Senior Genetic Technologists and Clinical Scientists, the post holder will support workflow organisation within a specialist laboratory area. The role includes performing and troubleshooting laboratory techniques, assisting with staff training, supporting junior colleagues, and contributing to the laboratory Quality Management System. In addition to wet-lab work, the post holder will undertake initial analysis of test data and may report routine results. Applicants should possess excellent organisational, communication and practical laboratory skills, with a flexible approach and strong attention to detail. Essential requirements include experience working in a UKAS-accredited genetics laboratory, or similarly regulated environment, and practical experience and scientific understanding of a range of genomic techniques. Full training in local procedures will be provided. The successful candidate may be expected to work across a wider range of laboratory services as service needs evolve. Genetic Technologists undertake technical, analytical and administrative duties that support the clinical scientists in the department. They take personal responsibility for their own work on a daily basis subject to the supervision of the section head. They participate in various rotational duties within the department including monitoring of work areas for health and safety and cleanliness. They process a wide range of pathological specimens for a broad range of inherited conditions according to standard operating procedures, and are competent in the use of patient databases, state of the art technologies and a variety of software packages, some of which are complex, for the analysis of data. They perform highly accurate and skilled analysis, with often unpredictable outcomes and requiring periods of concentration. They are expected to communicate complex technical, scientific and confidential information to colleagues within their department in electronic, written and verbal forms. We provide a comprehensive range of cytogenetic, molecular cytogenetic and molecular genetic investigations for both rare disease and acquired disorders (solid tumour and haematological malignancy). Clinical Service 1. Deliver the technical service of a section/subsection or designated area of work to nationally accepted standards (UKAS or equivalent) with appropriate support to include the following: a. Follow standard operating procedures for the receipt, booking in, processing and analysis of samples b. Review appropriate risk and COSHH assessments in areas relevant to own practise and abide by laboratory health and safety policies c. Undertake basic troubleshooting for failed analyses d. Validate quality of technical analysis, repeat and perform subsequent investigations following discussions with more senior technologists or clinical scientists according to defined criteria e. Draft routine reports on the patient database according to defined templates f. Arrange dispatch of different types of samples. Deal with queries relating to the receipt and dispatch of samples, including products of conception (received for post-mortem examination), and other tissues. 2. Perform laboratory processes from a variety of biological specimens received which may be high risk (eg HIV, Hep C) and/ or derived from recognisable human or fetal parts, by all methods currently employed in the laboratory and to work safely under exposure to toxic substances which are hazardous to health. 3. Identify unusual or failed results and bring them to the attention of Senior technologists or scientists for further discussion 4. Liaise with senior technical or scientific colleagues over availability of equipment, sample prioritisation, or requirement for supplementary laboratory processes, when planning work schedules in designated areas of work, in accordance with laboratory protocols and under the supervision of the Section Head and/or Laboratory Director. 5. Supply a high level of technical expertise in the investigative procedures involved and take a daily responsibility for their own work, subject to the supervision and direction of section head or other senior staff. Be adaptable to changing diagnostic workload pressures, by making independent day-to-day decisions about workload in designated area. The post holder must communicate all problems with, and when necessary obtain help/advice from, appropriate senior staff 6. Attend, and actively participate in, team and laboratory meetings with opportunity to propose improvements in efficiency and changes to scientific and technical protocols and to contribute to the development and implementation of departmental policies within the limits of experience. Laboratory Management 7. Prepare reagents and media used in the processing and testing of samples, and safely handle toxic substances that are hazardous to health. 8. Undertake appropriate duties to fulfil quality control programs, including (but not limited to) recording of appropriate data according to operating procedures, validation and verification of new reagents and protocols. 9. Identify biological materials for safe disposal or storage, according to departmental protocols. Dispose of hazardous chemicals and biohazard waste 10. Staff 12. Participate in the teaching and training of new members of staff or less experienced employees in own work area by demonstrating own work activities and routine practice. 13. Advise other technologists and less experienced staff in areas such as sample processing, basic troubleshooting, organisation of work, setting up of instrumentation. Research and Service Development 14. Assist clinical scientists in research and development projects which meet the overall objectives of the department. Personal Development 15. Participate in and attend in house training at postgraduate level for the development and maintenance of skills, knowledge and expertise required for the post (eg scientific and technical literature reviews, seminars, presents own work on relevant topics) Informatics/Bioinformatics 16. Be proficient in the use of Microsoft office applications to prepare occasional written and oral presentations (eg powerpoint presentations, word documents). The person appointed will predominantly be based at The New Royal University Hospital site and will be joining a friendly and dedicated Nephrology Team. Applicants are required to hold membership of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent qualifications, to be fully registered with the General Medical Council and listed on the Specialist Register (or due to be registered within six months of the date of interview. They should have dual accreditation in Nephrology and General Internal Medicine. Appointee will join a team of 21 Nephrologists. A full range of renal replacement therapies are provided both on site and in satellite units and a comprehensive general nephrology service is supported by the Consultants. Post will also support the existing renal replacement therapy or other speciality area in the service at the Aintree Hospital site. Department of Nephrology Following the opening of the New Royal Hospital in October 2022, the Nephrology in-patient bed base has relocated and is consolidated across two wards in the New Royal Hospital. The Nephrology in-patient bed base has 42 beds (includes 8 regional renal High Care beds) and is co-located with Renal Transplant surgery who have 14 beds. The new model ensures that ALL complex renal patients in the region (transplant, dialysis, AKI needing organ support, complex immunosuppression) have equitable access 24/7 to a bespoke MDT Tertiary unit. The Nephrology footprint extends beyond LUHFT’s sites; the LUHFT renal team provide all aspects of kidney care - Acute Kidney Injury (AKI); Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD); Renal Replacement Therapy (RRT); conservative management of patients who choose not to have dialysis/transplant; and transplantation across Merseyside, including parts of Cheshire (Population c.1.06m). The Renal Transplant Unit provides services to the Wirral and North Wales (Population 2.5m). The Regional Renal unit has a 33 stationed dialysis unit in the lower ground floor, with 8 bedded High Care Unit in ward 7C and another 21 dialysis plumbed rooms between the wards 7C and 7B. In response to the NCEPOD Report there is a robust and responsive strategy for management of acute kidney injury (AKI) both within the Trust and in outlying Trusts with an integrated alert programme highlighting new cases of AKI. There are satellite dialysis units at Broadgreen Hospital, St Helens Hospital, Warrington Hospital, Halton Hospital, Waterloo dialysis unit and Southport hospital. Clinical Governance for these patients rests wholly within the Royal Liverpool University Hospital Nephrology Directorate, within the Divisional and Trust structure for clinical governance and risk management. The Renal Transplant Unit (RTU) serves Merseyside, North Wales, and the Isle of Man. The transplant team performs approximately around 100 renal transplants per year with a planned programme to increase to 120 per year. This includes an active living door transplant programme and a comprehensive programme involving both non-heart beating donation and ABO incompatible donor transplants. Major investment here recently includes the agreed planned expansion of Consultant Transplant Surgeon numbers from 5 to 6. All Consultant Nephrologists when on-call have a commitment to nephrology consultations in the RTU. As per national recommendation patients who have been transplanted for more than 12 months are transferred back to Nephrology and are seen in dedicated post-transplant follow up clinic. We also attend acute transplant clinics and perform in-patient transplant reviews. There are excellent opportunities and facilities for research within the Trust. The present areas of interest within the Renal Unit are diverse and include inhouse research capabilities along with involvement in various national and international studies. We are committed to submitting data to the UK Renal Registry and pursue the standards set in the NICE, UKKA standards and agreed yearly CQUINS with commissioners. There is a robust quality assurance management programme with regular MDT meetings and audit reviews.
