The Autonomic Unit provides an integrated investigational, diagnostic and therapeutic management service for people with a variety of autonomic nervous system disorders. You will be part of the healthcare science team performing comprehensive specialist physiological investigations on patients with neurological and other medical disorders to inform diagnosis and therapy. The autonomic nervous system controls blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature, sexual function, and the motility of the intestine and the urinary bladder. Autonomic disorders can arise alone, as a single medical condition, or in combination with many other diseases such as parkinsonism and diabetes. Core duties relate to physiological diagnostic testing with the production of factual and clinical reports. You will be capable of self-directed learning. Phlebotomy skills and experience of specialist autonomic testing are desirable but not essential as full training will be given. You will be a caring person who enjoys interacting directly with the general public. Undertake comprehensive specialist physiological testing and factual reporting of a range of autonomic functions in patients with neurological and other medical disorders using the wide range of medical technology within the area. This will include venepuncture/cannulation as part of the test procedures and the collection and processing of blood samples for specialist plasma biochemical assessment. Provide and receive confidential, clinical, complex, contentious and sensitive information requiring reassurance, verbal and non-verbal communication skills and empathy: Consent patients for their investigations and encourage compliance with investigation protocols; extract relevant clinical information from correspondence, clinical case notes, patients and carers, explain clearly the investigations to be performed, their purpose and possible outcomes. Patients and carers may be anxious, confused or have limited English. You may need to work through an interpreter. Write clear factual summaries in medical case notes of the complex information obtained during clinical investigations. Prepare clear, detailed factual reports of investigations and present this information in writing for the medical records, local and external and orally at Consultants’ ward rounds, to departmental colleagues and a wide range of clinical staff. The successful applicant will be based at Aintree University Hospital, one of the Trust’s key sites, and will become an integral member of the Vascular Surgery department. The department is committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care, and the post holder will play an active role in the ongoing development of clinical services, education, research, and service improvement initiatives. Applicants must hold Membership or Fellowship of one of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons (UK), or equivalent qualification, and be fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC), possess a current licence to practice, and be listed on the GMC Specialist Register for Vascular Surgery, or be eligible for inclusion within six months of the interview date. With this and additional appointments the number will raise to 18. Each consultant has an elective job plan which involves sessions at one of our network sites, in addition to sessions at the Aintree site Hub. A total of 16 Consultants will contribute to the acute/on-call work and they participate in complementary “C1” and “C2” rotas during which they are free of any elective commitments. Friday afternoon is set aside as a Directorate session which begins with the forthcoming weekly plan at 1.30 and a review of all inpatients and patients requiring urgent surgery. The rest of the afternoon consists of a rolling programme of audit, teaching, clinical governance, directorate meetings, research presentations and invited guest lectures. The successful applicant will become part of the Peripheral/General vascular team with a total of 10 Consultants contributing. They will undertake work at both Aintree University Hospital and one of the network spoke sites. They will participate in the daytime C1 rota at Aintree. Working with the NCOT Lead Nurse, Senior NCOT Nurses and multidisciplinary team, you will provide high-quality, family-centred neonatal care, supporting babies and families during their transition from hospital to home. The NCOT service supports early discharge and ongoing care of babies requiring interventions such as oxygen therapy, phototherapy, nasogastric tube (NGT) feeding, home phototherapy, medication administration, growth monitoring and developmental support. The team also cares for babies discharged weighing less than 1.8kg, those born below 35 weeks corrected gestational age, and babies with additional medical or nursing needs requiring specialist community follow-up. Working across both neonatal inpatient and community settings, you will maintain and develop neonatal skills while promoting continuity of care. The service covers Telford, Shropshire and Powys and works closely with neonatal, maternity, paediatric, health visiting and primary care teams to provide safe, seamless and effective care for babies and their families. The post holder will work across both neonatal inpatient services and the community setting to maintain and develop neonatal clinical skills while supporting continuity of care for families. The post holder will assess the suitability of referrals and ensure eligibility criteria is met. They will be involved with the discharge process to ensure a seamless, timely transfer from hospital to the home environment and communicate with families to prepare them for the transition home. The post holder will risk assess patient needs, environment and care required during each visit. The post holder will need recent Neonatal experience within a hospital setting to ensure they have the clinical knowledge to identify deterioration or recognise improvement of the patient and adapt care plans accordingly. As an autonomous practitioner they must have the ability to solve problems, confidently function in a lone worker capacity, effectively manage time and demonstrate excellent communication skills. The post holder will practice in a holistic, non-judgmental, caring and compassionate manner that avoids assumptions, supports social inclusion and respects individual diversity. They will work in partnership with the MDT, service users, their carers and families.
