    Applications are invited for a Consultant with a special interest in mitochondrial diseases, to join the NHS Highly Specialised Service for Rare Mitochondrial Diseases at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUHFT). The vacancy has arisen due to the expanding clinical service and the need for further specialist adult support for this national service. Oxford is a large tertiary neurosciences centre, with a busy Clinical Genetics department, and offers a wide range of clinical and academic interests. Oxford is renowned for its expertise in neuromuscular diseases and is a member of the European Reference Network for such conditions. We are looking for an enthusiastic clinical consultant colleague to join a well-established group of colleagues from paediatrics, clinical genetics, adult neurology and other disciplines. The post will include providing liaison for the nationally commissioned Highly Specialised Service in Mitochondrial Diseases, and it will deliver a twice monthly face-to-face multi-disciplinary team (MDT) clinic, monthly virtual clinic, and twice monthly MDT as well as in-patient reviews as required. While this is a clinical post, there are ample opportunities to participate and develop interests in teaching and academic work in this large University Hospitals Trust. 1. PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES: The post-holder’s duties will be primarily at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Hospital but it is a condition of the appointment that the postholder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations. Research experience in neuromuscular diseases and/or genetic disorders will be welcome and be supporting evidence of a sub-specialist interest in this field. While this is a clinical post, contribution to academic work will be encouraged. Clinical Governance The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies. Personal and Professional Development The post-holder will be required to keep him-/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice, and will have to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs. Between April 1, 2014, and March 31 2015 we treated 100,662-day cases and inpatients (elective and non-elective), 329,257 outpatients and had 83,303 A & E attendances. The total number of community contacts was 1,228,494. • Undertake delegated clinical duties within the clinical setting. • To maintain the highest possible standard of clinical practice • To supervise other practitioners within the team and develop their appropriate knowledge and skills. • To be involved in the delivering care to patients with long term conditions. • To assist the Registered staff in the interpretation and analysis of clinical and non-clinical facts to inform accurate treatment in a wide range of conditions and to assist in the recommendation of the best course of intervention and to assist in the development of discharge plans. • To work as part of the multi-disciplinary team, referring to other staff members/ services where appropriate. • To help establish and maintain communication flows between the Trust and other health and social care providers regarding ongoing care. • To assist in the evaluation of new equipment as appropriate. Act as an autonomous practitioner, providing advanced clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) and Minor Treatment Unit (MTU) with a wide range of minor injuries and illnesses.
