    NUH Life Fertility Service is a small but dedicated multidisciplinary team providing Fertility care to both men and women in the East Midlands region. We have an exciting opportunity for aClinical Scientist in Andrologyto join our laboratory team, providing both diagnostic and therapeutic Andrology services to our patients and donors. We are exceptionally proud of our sperm donor bank which provides high quality donor sperm across the UK, and we run a regional male fertility preservation service covering the East Midlands. The ideal candidate will already have a minimum of 3yrs experience (with at least 1yr working at a senior level) in an Andrology service. You will have strong skills in male fertility preservation and ideally also in sperm donation programmes. However if you do not have experience of sperm donation and are looking for an opportunity to gain skills and experience is this highly regulated and rewarding area of work, we will consider appointing candidates at a B6 level and provide comprehensive training in this area, so please do not be deterred from applying if you meet all other essential criteria. Please note we do not offer IVF at NUH Life, and as suchthis position is not suitable for those wishing to pursue a career in Embryology. You will play a key role as the Quality Lead for the laboratory service, working under direction of the Service Lead and Quality Manager. You should demonstrate a good awareness of Quality Management processes and their role in the provision of a high quality laboratory service. Working on Wards, Outpatients and in the Community Diagnosic Centre, Stafford Park. Main base is Telford. We are advertising for 1 x 37.5 hour post working 37.5 hours over 7 days at any of the phlebotomy locations. This is a cross site post when there is an operational need to travel to an alternative site. Monday-Friday 5 days 08:00-12:00 or 13:00 - 17:00 between phlebotomy operating hours. Following a rotational Rota for weekends and bank holidays. Phlebotomy operating hours currently are: 08:00-17:00 Monday-Friday, 08:00-12:00 noon Saturday's, Sunday's and bank holidays. These hours are currently under review and could be subject to change in the future. The successful candidate must have experience as a Supervisor Phlebotomist, should have excellent communication skills, be able to work under pressure with the ability to record data accurately, have an approachable nature and the ability to fulfil the travel requirements. Previous experience working as a supervisor is essential. Shifts will vary according to service needs so flexibility is essential. The successful applicants will be part of a team that provides a phlebotomy service to The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust. Duties will include - • Collection of blood samples by venepuncture from adults and paeds in Community Diagnostic Centre, wards, and outpatients • Collection of blood samples by venepuncture from children age 12 months to 18 years. • Recording and labelling of samples in accordance to SOP’s. • Collection of relevant statistics and entering into relevant databases. • Delivery of samples to the laboratory by hand, via the hospital vacuum air tube system, by portering staff and transport systems • Understand and apply health and safety, clinical risk management and quality control responsibilities, as these relate to the performance of your duties. • Maintain a clean and tidy working environment. • Midday, morning, or afternoon shifts- including weekends and Bank/Public holidays are allocated on a rota basis across the whole team. • There is occasional expectation to cover periods of absence by other members of the team. • Through appraisal and liaison with the phlebotomy trainers, continually maintain and update skills, maintaining a personal record of achievement. • Organising Rotas for all shift patterns for wards, outpatients and community. • Supervising phlebotomists /booking team/volunteers • Updating statistics At present we have 46 Phlebotomists working across 4 sites. We provide a safe booking appointment system at The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford (PRH), The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) Community Diagnostics Centre(CDC) and Whitchurch Community Hospital. We cover inpatients (PRH/RSH only) and outpatients at all 4 sites, providing a service for both GP's and consultants.     As an Associate Practitioner in histology, the post holder is responsible for a variety of tasks that assist in the smooth operation of the section in order to deliver a specialised, diagnostic service, which contributes to the clinical care of the patient. The post holder will carry out procedures in the Pathology Department, which do not require HPC registration. They will handle body fluids and materials, including high-risk specimens from i.e. HIV and Hepatitis B patients. They will perform appropriate scientific investigations for patients in the diagnosis of pathological disease. Using the knowledge and experience gained through training to Foundation or BSc degree level, staff will process work through the Department. The post holder will act under supervision or without supervision, following competence assessment directed by senior staff. You will be responsible to and liaise closely with the senior staff in the department providing a high-quality technical service that builds on the standards defined by UKAS. You will be expected to develop and maintain close working relationships with all grades of staff both scientific and medical to ensure the effective delivery of the technical service. The job will involve exposure to body fluid samples, human tissue samples and harmful chemicals.• To participate in the routine Cellular Pathology rotas. To check the validity of sample labelling and type. Assist in the Specimen Reception section when required to meet the operational needs of the department. • To troubleshoot simple laboratory problems, seeking advice and support from senior staff when appropriate. Such issues would include: • Mislabelled samples • Poor performing assays and equipment • Queries from service users • To adhere to Trust Policy regarding Data Protection, Information Governance and Freedom of Information. • To adhere to Trust and Departmental Health & Safety policy including wearing of Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) when required. • To maintain and promote high standards of Health & Safety within the workplace. • To dispose of specimens and other material in accordance with H&S guidelines, RCPATH recommendations and local Pathology protocols. • To provide the Health & Safety Leads with support in implementing policies and audit procedures. • To support the Quality Lead in audits, EQA, raising and closing non-conformities on Q-Pulse and reviewing documents. • To support the Training Lead with the delivering of the training programme where appropriate. • To report and remedy, within scope of practice, any instance or event which may cause a service delivery failure. • To report any risks, clinical and non-clinical accidents and incidents/potential incidents promptly to senior members of staff and using the DATIX system if appropriate and co-operate with any investigations undertaken. • To support the Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLA) or other Trainee staff, and to assist qualified Associate Practitioners and Biomedical Scientists in their roles. • Package and send away samples for referral when required. • Maintain the adequate storage of samples and their correct disposal at the appropriate time. • Perform routine operative maintenance on laboratory instruments and undertake corrective maintenance and troubleshooting when appropriate. • Undertake manual, semi-automated and fully automated laboratory investigations, following set protocols and procedures to prepare and quality control stained histology tissue slides. • To progress to performing specimen transfer of RCPath Category A specimens following a period of training and competency assessment. • Prepare reagents required for use in the laboratory and other related areas.
