An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Ophthalmic Technician to join our team of 9 Orthoptists , 5 Optometrists and 8 Ophthalmic Technicians at Epsom & St Helier. The successful candidate will work alongside a dedicated team of Ophthalmologists, Orthoptists, Optometrists, Nurses & Ophthalmic Technicians in a busy and supportive department. The post will involve working at both Epsom and St Helier Hospitals, with an interesting and varied caseload. The post holder will contribute in the assessment of patients attending the Ophthalmic department at Epsom and St Helier Hospitals across multiple sites. The post holder will work without direct supervision to provide a high quality technical service including diagnostic testing and imaging for adult and paediatric patients across a variety of sub-specialities under the direction of the Head Orthoptist and Clinical Leads. The post holder will provide a variety of diagnostic tests following training and achievement of competences. The tests required will include assessment of visual acuity, Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT) both posterior and anterior, Digital Retinal Imaging, Corneal Topography, Biometry and Visual Field Assessment. The post holder should have the ability to work closely with members of the multi-disciplinary teams. The post holder is expected to participate in departmental teaching and clinical audit. The post holder will work within standard operating procedures, departmental guidelines and protocols. The post holder will work within a variety of ophthalmology clinics to meet the needs of the service. As part of the medicines management team , you will have responsibility for the delivery of a high quality service to both inpatients and outpatients at SLaM. This post provides the opportunity to use your skills providing patient care at ward level, as well as delivering an efficient, technician led dispensary service. The post involves working alongside our clinical pharmacists providing an integrated delivery of pharmaceutical care initiatives for patients in the Trust to ensure safe, appropriate and cost-effective use of medicines. The pharmacy department provides a clinical and dispensing service to wards and community teams in Croydon, Southwark, Lambeth and Lewisham across four main hospital sites as well as a wide variety of community mental health teams. We provide information about medication to both staff and patients to improve understanding and contribute to evidence-based care. • To provide a comprehensive pharmaceutical Medicines Management service to patients. • To work as an Accredited Checking Technician and be able to check clinically screened prescriptions. • To be able to act independently in following department SOPs • To dispense medication accurately and be able to decide when it is necessary to refer to the Senior Clinical Pharmacists. • To participate in the provision of patient counselling to patients and their carers • To participate in the provision of Medicines Reconciliation and PODs service to wards and community units. • To be carry out stock checks / stock top ups on wards and/or community units. • To order non-stock items from electronic prescription charts (EPMA) for supply by pharmacy • To assess and credit returned drugs, following the Pharmacy returns policy • To provide teaching and support to other health care professionals regarding good dispensing practice, medicine usage and storage, both internally and externally. • To assist day to day organisation of staff in the dispensary and to facilitate efficient running of service ensuring that procedures relating to good dispensary practice are followed. • To participate in research and audit undertaken in pharmacy • To guide and act as a practice supervisor to Pharmacy Assistants, pre-registration pharmacy technicians and Trainee Pharmacists as appropriate in medicines management and dispensary techniques. • To ensure that the principles of safe and secure handling of medicines are adopted and to take part in quality assurance systems for pharmaceutical services. • To attend and participate in departmental education and training meetings. • To maintain a Continuing Professional Development portfolio. • To communicate clearly and sensitively about patient medication issues both internally and externally. • To participate in the dispensary cover rota. This includes taking in prescriptions and verify personal details; take a current drug history from the patient or carer to identify any drug allergies, drug interactions or problems with the medication prescribed; to give out patient medication to patients and counsel the patient on their medication to promote concordance. This will include the name of the medication, dosage, common side-effects and administration details including use of devices. The Royal Free Hospital (RFH) pharmacy department works under a ‘specials’ manufacturers licence. The RFH pharmacy department also holds a Manufacturing Authorisation for Investigational Medicinal Products MIA (IMP), which allows the unit to manufacture products for Clinical Trials. The Pharmacy Manufacturing department is primarily concerned with the preparation and supply of medicines to internal and external customers including homecare services. The two key areas within the department that the post holder will be responsible for on rotation are Aseptic services (Cytotoxic unit, CIVAS) and Sterile /Non Sterile manufacture. The post holder will ensure that production services are delivered in a safe, effective, economic and timely manner. The post holder will be responsible for the training and supervision of all technical staff within the designated areas and ensuring that all documentation/procedures comply with current legislation. The post holder will collaborate with the Operational Lead Pharmacist and Operations Chief Technician to maximise pharmacy departmental resources. Overall the post holder will be responsible for the training, accreditation, management and safety of staff working in the unit, whether on a short term, or long term basis. This role involves operational management of the Chemotherapy Unit, Central Intravenous Additive Services (CIVAS), Laminar Air Flow Cabinet unit (LAFC Unit), Sterile Batches unit and Non-Sterile unit on a rotational basis. Aseptic Services: The Chemotherapy service primarily provides internal supply of parenteral systemic anticancer treatment and clinical trials to the day case outpatient clinics. Sterile services encompass the manufacture of terminally sterilised batch products for internal use and supply to external customers. The Non-Sterile service comprises of compounding of the semisolids, oral liquids, powders, capsules, over labelling and prepacking of medicines.
