Bring expertise in project managing construction contracts Bringing to the role experience in drafting, tendering and managing NEC4, or similar construction contracts. You’ve applied project management methodologies in the design, development and implementation of multidisciplinary construction projects, and led teams and managed people before. As a project manager, you can be relied on for responsible budgeting, cost control, financial tracking and reporting. Your accurate cost forecasts have helped to support informed decision making. Alongside this, you’ll have strategic risk management experience. You’re able to identify, assess and prioritise risks, lead mitigation planning, and escalate threats or opportunities where appropriate. You will also be familiar with relevant Health & Safety standards and procedures including Construction Design Management 2015. You will be familiar with estates asset management and lifecycle planning, along with CDM regulations and Principal Designer responsibilities You have a relevant professional qualification (e.g. PRINCE2 Practitioner, APM PMQ or equivalent). Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. RIBA, RICS, ICE, CIBSE or APM) would be advantageous. Awareness of Project Management products such as M_o_R® , MSP® and M_o_V® would be another plus. The ITk upgrade is a new detector for measuring the momentum and origin of charged particles emanating from the proton-proton collisions in the centre of the experiment. You will be based in the Liverpool Semi-conductor Detector Centre cleanroom and/or Advanced Material Laboratory complex within the Department of Physics at Liverpool. You will join a team of 15 physicists and engineers working together on the manufacture and quality-control testing of mechanical and electrical elements for the endcap pixel tracker and the barrel strip tracker. You will participate in the precision mechanical assembly of the carbon fibre structures and gluing of components to form modules. You are required to follow written instructions reliably and to enter data into the construction database. You will have to use computer controlled metrology equipment for geometrical quality control of manufactured components. You will have to monitor and report yields, machine problems and the usage of consumables. You will be expected to attend technical meetings at Liverpool and occasionally off-site as the project proceeds. This role requires the highest standard of cleanroom working and mechanical assembly disciplines to be applied. You will be required to work from formal engineering drawings and specifications including tolerancing. Good sensory and physical co-ordination is essential given the small scale and delicate nature of the detectors. Past experience of working in a clean room environment, working with carbon fibre and geometrical quality control are highly-desirable. You will have good communication skills and the ability to instruct others (e.g. students) in the production procedures. Further details about the role BACKGROUND TO THE POST The Construction workshop managers provide a high standard of technical and learning support in order to maintain a safe, well prepared and realistic working environment. This role will be essential to the effective delivery of study programmes to young people and qualifications to adults and high standards of health and safety. SUBJECT AREAS COVERED The workshop manager will be required to support sessions in a range of construction subject areas, and will need sound knowledge of a range of the construction industry. It would be desirable for an applicant to have a specific trade within construction. We would expect the appointed person to undertake First Aid training as part of their role and remain a designated First Aider within the department. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Health, Safety, and Compliance • The workshop manager will act as the primary lead for workshop safety and will promote and maintain high standards of student behaviour and conduct. • Conduct and record weekly inspections of all power tools, access equipment and stationary machinery • Maintain COSHH records and ensure that dust extraction systems are functioning correctly to meet environmental health standards. • A critical part of the role involves drafting and updating Risk Assessments and Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all equipment. • Manage the cleaning and sanitisation of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and ensure it is stored correctly for student use. 2. Resource and Asset Management • To prevent the loss of equipment, the workshop manager will implement and oversee a robust tool sign-out system. • Maintain stock levels of essential tools and consumables, including plumbing and electrical supplies, and ensure each workshop is fully equipped to minimise the movement of tools between areas. • Coordinate with the department head to identify procurement needs and manage the disposal of waste materials in line with college policy. 3. Maintenance and Technical Support A key requirement of this role is the hands-on maintenance of hand tools and machinery: • The regular sharpening of chisels, saws, and plane irons to ensure they are safe and effective for student use. • Perform basic repairs on broken equipment where possible and arrange for specialist external servicing when required. • During practical sessions, assist teaching staff by preparing materials (e.g., cutting timber to size) and ensuring workbenches are clear of hazards. 4. Workshop Housekeeping • Enforce and maintain a high standard of cleanliness across all construction areas (includes hoovering, clearing of off-cuts, and deep cleaning of workshops during half-term periods). By reducing dust buildup and organising storage racks, the workshop manager will ensure a professional, industry-standard environment that aligns with college expectations and health and safety requirements. Criteria: Level 2 qualification in a construction related subject and a background in the industry. Highly organized, capable of working independently, and able to maintain accurate digital and paper-based records of safety checks and inventory. Previous experience of working within the vocational area. Awareness of Health and Safety regulations and experience of implementing H&S procedures. Willingness to undertake essential first aid and advanced first aid training - and maintain designated first aider status for the department Experience in using and maintaining a range of appropriate equipment. We are working with an established regional main contractor delivering new-build, refurbishment, retrofit and cut and carve projects across London and the South East. They are in a strong period of growth with an increasing T/O currently circa £60M. Their projects typically range from £3m to £20m, with a particularly strong track record in education and public-sector schemes, alongside healthcare, community, heritage, residential and commercial projects. As Senior Design Manager, you will take responsibility for the design process from pre-construction through delivery and completion, ensuring information is coordinated, buildable, compliant and aligned with programme and commercial requirements, working closely with the Precon and Build team. This is a key role with the opportunity to lead and build the Design Team as it grows with the company with their planned expansion. You will: Manage design across new-build and refurbishment projects, typically £3m-£20m. Coordinate architects, consultants, MEP teams and specialist subcontractor designers. Produce and manage Design Programmes, Information Release Schedules and Design Responsibility Matrices. Support tenders, pre-construction activities and value-engineering exercises.
