An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and motivated Senior Clinical Fellow to join our HIV Department at the North Middlesex University Hospital for a period of 6 months. This is an excellent and unique opportunity for trainees interested in a career in or broadening their experience of HIV and Infectious diseases, and to develop their skills working within a dedicated and experienced multidisciplinary team. The post will include audit and quality improvement. You will work along-side specialist trainees in Acute Medicine/GUM/HIV/ID, and under Consultant supervision. This post is based in the Alexander Pringle Centre at North Middlesex University Hospital. There are opportunities for education and learning in management of HIV care, working with the ID team, Sexual Health and acute medical colleagues. Prior experience in HIV and Sexual health, while desirable, is not essential, as training will be provided. Although the experience and training provided to the appointee are the same as provided to registrars in training, this post is not recognised for training. The Alexander Pringle centre (APC) is a self-contained outpatient unit based in the North Middlesex Hospital and offers general HIV outpatient and inpatient care. It serves the local population of Enfield and Haringey, and has approximately 1500 patients. NMUH North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Hospital Trust (NMUH) is one of London’s busiest healthcare providers, providing hospital care and community services for the 350,000 people living in Enfield, Haringey and beyond. Our specialist services include HIV, cardiology, blood disorders, diabetes, fertility, sickle cell and thalassemia. In addition to a full range of cancer diagnosis and treatment services, the Helen Rollason Cancer Support Centre is based on-site and provides services to support cancer patients’ wellbeing. We also provide community services and have a dedicated 0-19 service for children and young people in Enfield so that they can get the best possible start in life. This includes health visitors and school nurses who are delivering the national Healthy Child Programme, which provides a structured framework for the delivery of key interventions to support the health and wellbeing of children and families from 0 to 5 and school aged children from 5-19. Royal Brompton is an internationally renowned specialist heart and lung hospital with a long-standing reputation for clinical excellence, innovation, research and education. The hospital manages patients with some of the most complex cardiothoracic conditions referred from across the UK and internationally. This fellowship offers high-quality clinical experience, structured education programme, simulation training and individualised career development within a supportive, consultant-led department using state-of-the-art facilities. Job overview This post would suit a senior anaesthetic trainee in possession of FRCA (or equivalent) or experienced anaesthetic trainee with a post graduate anaesthesia qualification looking to gain further experience and complete higher and advanced training in cardiothoracic anaesthesia. Anaesthetic trainees pursuing the CESR pathway and international fellows seeking specialist training in a leading UK cardiothoracic centre are welcomed to apply, subject to eligibility for GMC registration and relevant employment and immigration requirements. The successful candidate will participate in the provision of all aspects of Anaesthesia for adults, undergoing a wide variety of cardiology, cardiac and thoracic surgical procedures. Fellows will gain experience across abroad and complex adult caseload, including cardiac, thoracic surgery, aorto-vascular, adult congenital heart disease, structural heart interventions, TAVI, TEER, electrophysiology, robotic navigational bronchoscopy, minimally invasive surgery, robotic cardiac and thoracic procedures. Royal Brompton is also an accredited Enhanced Recovery After Cardiac Surgery (ERACS) centre. The exact case mix will depend upon the post holder’s prior experience and career aims and clinical exposure will be tailored, where possible, to the fellow’s learning needs. The trainee will work with appropriate consultant supervision and will have clearly identified educational goals. The department offers a structured, consultant-led teaching programme complemented by practical simulation-based education. Current and planned opportunities include transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE), regional anaesthesia and chest-wall blocks for cardiothoracic surgery, and airway simulation for thoracics. The programme has received excellent participant feedback and provides practical, clinically relevant training in advanced cardiothoracic anaesthesia. The successful candidate will receive supervised TOE experience and support in working towards recognised TOE accreditation. Fellows will also have opportunities to participate in audit, quality improvement, research and teaching, while developing portfolio evidence relevant to UK higher or advanced cardiothoracic training and, where appropriate, CESR Pathway. This post may close early if a sufficient number of applications have been received. The department provides anaesthetic services on a daily basis for each of the six operating theatres, 4 catheter laboratories and the CT scanning suite. A designated Consultant covers all theatre lists. Trainees are not expected to undertake cases alone without the prior agreement of the educational supervisor or nominated deputy. Occasionally lists are covered by the Clinical Fellows or SpR's without the immediate presence of a consultant. The trainee in question must ensure that they are aware: • Which Consultant is covering them should difficulties arise • What their documented training objectives are for that list The Recovery Unit is closed from 20.00 hours on Friday evening until Monday morning. Lists are allocated to trainees the previous week. Details of each list are available at theatre reception on the previous afternoon and are arranged by the Theatre Scheduler. Pre-operative assessment of the following day’s patients is the responsibility of the trainee scheduled to the respective list. Where this is not possible, for example due to heavy theatre commitments or if trainees are not in the Hospital, then the on-call Registrar will arrange to see the patient. We are looking for an exceptional senior research nurse to join the clinical research facility (CRF) research team. This post will provide clinical leadership for our expanding research portfolio, manage junior research delivery staff and support the team to deliver high-quality research. You will be responsible for the management of your team's research portfolio, reviewing protocols, amendments and identifying resource implications. You will have line management responsibilities and will actively be involved with staff recruitment, training, supporting and mentoring of all team members. You should have good experience in clinical research within the NHS, a strong clinical background and desire and willingness to learn and develop others. Essential skills are excellent communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to prioritise and meet tight deadlines, the ability and initiative to work independently and manage a patient caseload across a variety of research studies. The post holder is expected to work on shift patterns necessary to ensure patient safety and timely delivery of clinical trials. Work patterns will include day shifts, regular late and some night duties and weekends as required by trial protocols. Responsibilities will include the co-ordination of a portfolio of early phase translational clinical research, collaborating with key personnel throughout the two adult Clinical Research Facilities (CRF), to ensure continued care and support for patients and healthy volunteers involved in these clinical trials and studies. The post holder will take responsibility for supervising the safe administration of experimental therapies, and for monitoring the effects of drugs and other treatment modalities used in these trials. They may also be involved in gaining ethical approval, collecting data, interviewing and data entry. The post holder will be expected to advocate for patients and empower them to make informed choices concerning their involvement in the clinical trials by providing advice and information. The post holder will be involved in improvement projects to further develop the operational aspect of the CRFs. This includes attending feasibility and initiation meetings, monitoring CRF supplies and equipment, facilitating orientation and support of external staff to the CRF. Aspects of the role will include clinical tasks such as phlebotomy, analysis of blood specimens, drug administration and clinical observation.
