This role will include aspects of personal care, social and employment-based activities. The ideal candidate will need to be able to support me in these areas and integrate seamlessly into both my family, work, social life, as well as supporting me with my day-to-day needs and my desire to live an active and fulfilling life, just like everybody else. Some of these personal care activities and needs will include the following: Help with dressing, transfers to and from my wheelchair using a hoist, washing (including getting a bath when desired), shaving, grooming and assisting me to go to the toilet when needed. Assistance during the night with turning over as I wake during the night a few times to change position. Assistance with meals including cooking and eating (I am not able to eat unassisted, so I need somebody to help me eat my meals with a knife and fork and cutting up food). Assistance with domestic activities such as preparing my washing, getting my clothes ready for the day, tidying the house and washing up around the kitchen, together with any other activities that I need assistance with that I am unable to do myself. Accompanying me on holidays, short breaks (fares and accommodation supported), social activities and working activities. Some of these activities may require travel and time spent away from home on occasions. The suitable candidate will have the following qualities: Have a positive, enthusiastic, and can-do attitude to both life and their daily work as the person will need to act as both a supporter and enabler for me to live an active, fulfilling and motivated life without barriers. Hold a clean full UK driving licence and be able to drive my car in case I want to do any leisure activities, for example attending sporting events, excursions, having holidays or required travel for working activities across the country. The person must also be comfortable with motorway driving, as well as being able to drive in both daylight and darkness hours. Be able to occupy and busy themselves at times with their own personal interests or household duties whenever I need to work or complete administration tasks throughout the day without distraction. Be flexible in working patterns and able to work in blocks during the week and weekends as part of a rota, on occasions when I want to go away, or to cover any unforeseen staff sickness. I consider this flexibility to be a two-way process, and this can be discussed at interview. Have a good ability and willingness to learn, familiarise and memorise the daily patterns of movements, adjustments, and routines, so that this becomes an instinctive and intuitive process. Exhibit patience on occasions when I am getting dressed or during times throughout the day whenever I may require any subtle adjustments to my clothes or repositioning in my wheelchair. Display a level of general fitness, stamina, and an ability to multitask and think on feet because sometimes my days can be fast paced whenever I have things on. Be able to mix comfortably with both my friends, family, and work contacts as and when required, fitting in seamlessly with my social circle. Display a level of technical acumen and be able to help with setting up and positioning my IT equipment, or assistance with my phone when out and about. Provide me with lifts to destinations when required as on occasions I go out independently with my friends without a personal assistant. Be trustworthy, laid back and discreet when required. Be capable of completing simple clerical tasks such as timely recording of their hours worked and providing support to me with any administration tasks as required. Finding suitable personal assistants is challenging for me so please only apply if you have a genuine interest in this job. The actual pattern of hours and be discussed at interview as I try to match flexibly what I need with the lives and circumstances of my personal assistants, and I am always happy to work on a two-way basis in this area. Excellent progression through various career pathway opportunities such as but not limited to: • Preceptorship Programme • Support and guidance with Revalidation • Hidden Gem and annual award ceremonies Excellent staff benefits, our benefit packages are amongst the best in London and include: • Health and wellbeing services • Season ticket loans • Cycle to work scheme MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Management and Organisation: • Participate in the efficient day to day running of the dispensary • To provide medicine management • Assist in maintaining correct Controlled Drug records in accordance with the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 • Maintain an up to date knowledge of developments in local/national guidance in order to maintain/deliver high quality services to the Prison. • Under the supervision of a senior technician, to provide a timely and efficient stock topping up service to the wings with responsibility for ensuring stock levels are appropriately maintained in accordance with an agreed stock list • Responsible for ensuring medicines are supplied and replenished to the emergency cupboards, giving medicine related advice, where necessary, to other healthcare professionals • Check emergency bags and maintain records for audit. • Once qualified for a suitable length of time to work towards completing the accredited checking technician’s course undertaking periodic re-assessment (every 2 years) as appropriate Dispensary responsibilities: • Work with a team of technicians to provide an accurate and efficient dispensing service. • Maintain a clean and tidy working environment for the dispensing process • Assist in the development, implementation and review of dispensary Standard Operating Procedures • Maintain computer files for prisoner information and dispensary computer operations via update discs • Maintain high levels of safety and security and be constantly vigilant • Ensure that pharmaceuticals are transported to the prison gate and around the prison in a manner which maintains the integrity and security of the medicines whilst adhering to necessary safety precautions • The post holder has a responsibility to themselves and others in relation to managing risk and health and safety and will be required to work within the prison service and CNWL Service Policies and Procedures and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 Clinical: • Ensure that all dispensed medicines are processed in accordance with agreed dispensing standards. • Enter patient details on the computerized record system using information from prescriptions prepared by the medical staff ensuring that drug histories are up to date and complete • Administer medication as prescribed, which may include oral, immunisations, intramuscular injections, insulin or nebulisers, and may be compounded by frequent unplanned interruptions such as other patients, staff requests • Provide regular medicines management service to each Wing to: • • Check all prescriptions and remove those out of date for filing in the prisoners’ medical notes • Check all medication including stocks, removing unwanted items for return to pharmacy in line with departmental policies and procedures • Ensure that patients being discharged back to the community have sufficient medication and a discharge letter summarising their care package for their GP. • Carry out CPR when required and make best use of the emergency equipment such as the defibrillator. • Undertake such other duties as may be reasonably required from time to time, which are consistent with the responsibilities and grade of the post. This may include providing cover for other teams internally or at other sites. Research & Audit: • Assist in the collection and analysis of workload data when requested • Help identify areas where the technical pharmacy service can be developed. Education and Training: • Participate in the development and delivery of training events for CNWL employed staff in the prison Healthcare to support: · The implementation of medicine related policies and procedures · An appropriate level of knowledge for healthcare professionals using homely remedies · The implementation of clinical guidelines and the preferred prescribing list Communication: • Deal appropriately with requests from GPs, courts, police and substance misuse clinics regarding patient medication, weighing up the need for information against patient confidentiality and seeking advice from more senior staff on complex and contentious issues • Advise selected patients regarding their medication and other relevant pharmaceutical issues adjusting the level of advice as appropriate to overcome barriers to understanding (e.g. hard of hearing, conveying complex information in an easily understandable form) Financial: • Support the Pharmacy Manager in providing the pharmacy service within the budgets relating to prescribing and provision of pharmaceutical services to ensure that budgets are not exceeded. • Support the Pharmacy Manager to identify potential savings from the medicine budget for future financial years if so required. Responsibilities specific to the prison environment: • To be familiar with Prison Standards, Standing Orders, Circular Instructions, Notices to Staff, Prison Rules, Health and Safety, and any other relevant material within the prison setting. • To ensure that the Healthcare Centre meets the security requirements. • The post holder will be in contact with prisoners on a daily basis; this client group can be challenging due to the high proportion that have mental health illness and substance misuse problems.
